How to Reserve a Puppy

How to make a Red-Dawn Golden Retriever puppy your very own:

We appreciate you taking the time to read this page to learn about our process. We value puppy buyers who do their research. To see litters coming or available puppies, visit our Available Puppies page.

Overview of Red-Dawn puppy placement

Thank you for considering a Red-Dawn as the breeder of your future Golden Retriever as your next family member. We are located 1 hour north of Dallas Texas. The breeder, Alicia Dawn, has bred and shown Goldens since the mid 1980’s. To learn more about Alicia, check out the About Us page.

Co-Breeder, Randy, has bred, trained and shown hunting Goldens for many years. His influence of focus is on great hunters who also make wonderful house companions is an invaluable resource to Goldens as a breed. He is well researched and knowledgeable on the American Hunting lines. If you are a hunter, you will directly deal with Randy. The all hunting dogs are registered as Red-Dawn Resolute.

We take deposits ahead of time for litters.  Our depositors often wait 4-12 months for a puppy once placing a deposit.

We post our Golden Retriever puppies on our Facebook page after they are 6 weeks or older and have not been reserved. This happens only occasionally therefor watching our Facebook page is not a good way to find a puppy. If you are interested in a future puppy, please fill out our Puppy Application.  We will then inform you of upcoming litters that match your criteria.

Colors we produce:

We produce all shades that Golden Retrievers come in: cream, light golden, medium golden, dark golden and red.

Heath & Raising protocol:

First, all parents are fully disease tested and certified with OFA and DNA. This includes Hips, Elbows, Eyes, Heart for the OFA CHIC seal of approval. All our Goldens see the cardiologist for both Auscultations and Echocardiograms. We take disease testing very serious and want to ensure our line is healthy. You’ll see our dogs are OFA CHIC plus Echo.

Second, the dogs get full DNA analysis for genetic disease and levels of inbreeding.
DNA can often be done on parents, grandparents or great grandparents so that we know what genes are/ are not passed on to the offspring. We use PawPrint Genetics, UC Davis VGL, Animal Genetics, Embark as our main DNA testing companies.

Third, we are incredibly concerned with the rampant inbreeding in Golden Retrievers and we attempt to lower the levels by outcrossing dogs of drastically opposite lines. We use DNA testing to guide our choices and not just pedigree analysis. Learn more about the science of DNA testing and inbreeding in Goldens on our Learn More page. That page lines to a collection of articles and science that we have documented.

Parents are DNA tested:

These are the following Golden Retriever specific DNA health tests performed on our dogs to insure your puppy can not inherit the following disorders. In addition, we do the full Embark disease panel of 200+ diseases, including the level of inbreeding the dog has, called COI.

PRA Progressive Retinal Atrophy 1 & 2 (blindness)

PRCD Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration (blindness)

DM- Degenerative Myelopathy (like Lou Gehrig’s Disease)

DMD– Muscular Dystrophy – muscle wasting

Dystophic Epidermolysis Bullosa – weak skin

Ostogenesis Inperfecta – brittle bones

Ichthyosis 1 & 2- Dandruff

CMS – Congenital Myasthenic Syndrome – muscle weakness

NCL – Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis – neurological disorder

Retina Dysplasia – eye disease

How the Pick Order/ Deposit process works for the available Golden Retriever puppies:

Red-Dawn has been blessed with many referrals and repeat puppy buyers. Depositors may have to wait 4-12 months for a puppy based on how often we have a litter. God continues to bless us with healthy puppies, but we have no control over what mothers are able to get pregnant or how many puppies are born in each litter. Our mother dogs are pets first, consequently, we limit the amount of litters each girl has. The maximum is 4 litters. Most our girls have 0-2 in their lifetime.

First:

We review your answers on the Puppy Application and contact you by phone or email.

Second:

After deciding if a Red-Dawn puppy is a good choice for your home, you may put a $500 deposit to go on our master deposit list.

Depositors receive notifications of litters when they are born. You tell us when you are interested in a litter.

Depositors are placed on a litter of interest in the order of seniority of deposits received. The more litters that pass the higher a depositors pick order seniority rises on a future litter. You may not have a high enough seniority of deposit to be on the first litter of interest.

Depositors are given 2 weeks to respond after a litter is announced. After the 2 week deadline we establish a pick order for that litter (based on the seniority of deposits). If you are not happy with your pick number for your litter of interest, you may move off that litter and wait on a future litter of interest.

Third:

You choose a puppy at 8 weeks of age, in addition puppies go home on that day.We usually set the picking day as Friday closest to the 8 week old birthday.  Depositors are given a 1 hour appointment in order of their pick order for that litter. Choice of puppy can be made in person or over the phone/videos. On puppy choosing day we help you make the choice by discussing each puppy’s Volhard temperament test results and our opinion of each pup’s temperament.  But if you are not happy with your choices, we can move your deposit to a future litter if there is not a good puppy match for you. Deposits are not refundable but they are transferable to future litters.
